Residence for Job Search or Entrepreneurship in Spain

Have you recently completed your higher education in Spain?

If you hold a Level 6 qualification or higher under the European Qualifications Framework—such as a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree—you can apply for a 24-month residence permit to search for a job or start your own business, all without leaving the country.

This permit allows you to stay in Spain for a non-extendable two-year period, giving you the time to find a job that matches your qualifications or to develop your entrepreneurial project. It’s an excellent opportunity to kick-start your professional career in Spain right after completing your studies.

ADVANTAGES

You can stay in Spain for up to 2 years after completing your studies.

You do not need to show a job offer at the time of application.

Ideal for entrepreneurs looking to start their own business.

You can apply electronically, without a visa, and without leaving Spain.

Your family members can stay with you if they already resided legally with you during your study stay.

The application is resolved in no more than 20 days — if there’s no response, it is automatically approved through administrative silence.

Requirements

Completion of higher education in Spain with an official degree at Level 6 or above of the European Qualifications Framework (e.g., a university degree).

Submit your application between 60 days before and 90 days after your study permit expires.

If a foreign national has completed studies at a higher education institution and has achieved at least Level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework (equivalent to a bachelor’s degree), they may remain in Spain for up to 24 months without the possibility of extension. During this time, they may look for employment in line with their studies or start a business project.

If, upon completing their studies, the student already has a job offer or an employment contract, it will not be necessary to apply for the residence permit for job search. They may directly modify their student residence permit to a residence and work permit as an employee (residencia y trabajo por cuenta ajena) in accordance with applicable regulations.

Likewise, if the student has a viable business plan and sufficient funds to start a business, they may modify their student residence permit to a residence and work permit as self-employed (residencia y trabajo por cuenta propia) without needing to first apply for the job search residence permit.

Level 6 (European Qualifications Framework)
This level usually corresponds to a bachelor’s degree and means that the person:

  • Has advanced knowledge in their field of study or work, with a critical understanding of theories and principles.

  • Possesses advanced skills to solve complex and unpredictable problems in their field, using creativity and innovation.

  • Is capable of managing complex technical or professional projects or activities, making decisions in unpredictable contexts.

  • Assumes responsibility for managing their own professional development and that of other individuals or groups.

Yes, family members may accompany them if they already did so during their student stay. Their stay in Spain will always be linked to the status of the main permit holder.

You will need to apply for a new residence and work permit according to the applicable law.
