  • The National Long-Term Residence allows you to live and work in Spain indefinitely.

  • The EU Long-Term Residence offers the same rights in Spain, but also makes it easier to move and work in other EU Member States (with certain additional procedures required in each country).

You must pay fee 790, code 052, which in 2025 amounts to €21.87 (this amount may vary depending on the year).

The first renewal must be requested 5 years after the card is issued.
The second and subsequent renewals must be requested every 5 years until the holder turns 30 years old.
After that age, renewals will be done every 10 years.

No. If you hold an EU Long-Term Residence permit granted by another EU Member State, you can apply to live in Spain without needing a visa.

Yes. Family members who are part of the family unit already established in the EU Member State that granted your EU Long-Term Residence permit can apply to live in Spain without needing a visa.

If you have an EU Long-Term Residence permit from another Member State and move to Spain, you can apply for the EU Long-Term Residence permit in Spain according to current regulations.
Once Spain grants you this permit, your EU Long-Term Residence status in the previous Member State will be lost, as Spain will notify that country of the new authorization.

You may lose your EU Long-Term Residence permit in Spain in the following situations:

  • If you obtained it with false or misleading information.

  • If you receive an expulsion order for legal reasons.

  • If you are outside the European Union for too long:

    • Normally, if you are outside the EU for 12 consecutive months.

    • If you previously had an EU Blue Card, or are a family member of someone who did, the limit is 24 consecutive months.

    • This limit does not apply to people working in international cooperation with a special authorization.

  • If you obtain EU Long-Term Residence in another EU Member State.

  • If you had international protection in another country and that country withdraws or revokes it.

  • If you are convicted of certain serious crimes (such as human trafficking or illegal immigration offenses).

  • If you are outside Spain for more than 6 consecutive years.

    • In exceptional and justified cases, the authorities may allow you to keep your permit despite this absence.
