Initial Study Stay in Spain

The long-term study stay authorization allows foreign citizens to stay in Spain for more than 90 days to pursue academic or training activities.

The stay permit is regulated by Article 52 of the Immigration Regulations and is granted in the following cases:

Higher education studies at recognized institutions (universities, master’s programs, private titles, higher vocational training, level 2 and 3 professional certificates).

Upper-level secondary education at accredited institutions.

International mobility programs for high school students.

Volunteering services within duly registered non-profit organizations.

Specific training programs, such as language assistants, official language school courses, preparation for MIR/EIR medical exams, or other regulated training programs.

Type of Study

The program may be delivered in-person or in a hybrid format, provided that at least 50% of the content is conducted face-to-face, in accordance with applicable regulations.

Requirements

You must not pose a threat to public order, safety, or health.

No criminal record in Spain or in countries of residence for the last five years.

Payment of the corresponding administrative fee.

Valid public or private health insurance with coverage in Spain.

Sufficient financial means to cover your stay, accommodation, and return travel.

Specific requirements based on type of activity

  • Enrollment in an accredited higher education institution.
  • Proof of payment for tuition or academic fees.
  • Participation in a full-time study program (covering at least 90% of enrolled credits).
  • Enrollment in an officially authorized and registered institution.r.
  • Full-time attendance in a program leading to a recognized academic or professional qualification.
  • Proof of payment for enrollment or tuition fees.
  • Participation in an official secondary education exchange program.
  • Enrollment in a recognized education institution.
  • Guarantee of accommodation and coverage of expenses during the stay.
  • Signed agreement with an organization participating in an officially recognized volunteer program.
  • The agreement must clearly outline the program’s objectives, duration, accommodation, meals, and training provided.
  • The organization must be registered with the relevant official registry.
  • Enrollment in an accredited institution offering officially recognized programs.
  • Programs may include roles as language assistants, courses at Official Language Schools, specialized healthcare training, or certified professional qualifications.
  • Documentation proving compliance with the specific requirements of the chosen training activity is required.

FAQs

It can be requested if you are coming to Spain for:

  • Pursuing higher education (university, master’s, doctorate, advanced vocational training, etc.).
  • Studying post-compulsory secondary education (baccalaureate, intermediate-level vocational training, etc.).
  • Taking part in a school mobility program (exchange) in compulsory or post-compulsory secondary education.
  • Carrying out volunteer service in a non-profit organization.
  • Undertaking specific training activities, such as working as a language assistant, learning Spanish or a co-official language (provided it is not your mother tongue), preparing for certain exams, or completing full professional certification courses.

University studies can be taken in person or in hybrid format, according to the established curriculum and the applicable university regulations. Other higher education studies can be taken in person or in hybrid format under current education regulations, as long as at least 50% of the program is delivered in person.

It depends on the case:

  • In most cases, you can apply from outside Spain by requesting a visa at the consulate.
  • In some cases, you can also apply from Spain if you are already here legally.
  • You must submit the application at least two months before starting the activity or before your legal status in Spain expires.

The application may be denied:

  • If you do not meet the requirements.
  • If you present false documents or incorrect information.
  • If the institution where you have been admitted is not recognized or authorized.
  • If you have serious criminal records that pose a threat to security, public order, or public health.
