Frequently Asked Questions about Long-Term National Residence in Spain

In general, you must have legally and continuously resided in Spain for 5 years prior to the application.

  • You may be absent for up to 6 consecutive months, without exceeding a total of 10 months within 5 years.

  • If the absences were due to work, the limit increases to 18 months within 5 years.

  • Absences are also allowed if due to justified force majeure or if you are working abroad as a cooperant with recognized NGOs, foundations, or associations.

Yes. You may also apply if you:

  • Receive a retirement pension or permanent disability pension in Spain.

  • Were born in Spain and legally resided there for at least 3 years before reaching adulthood.

  • Were originally Spanish and lost your nationality.

  • Were under the guardianship of a Spanish public entity for 5 years prior to adulthood.

  • Hold recognized status as a stateless person, refugee, or beneficiary of subsidiary protection in Spain or another EU member state.

  • Have made a notable contribution to Spain’s economic, scientific, cultural, or international progress (upon proposal by a competent authority).

  • The first renewal takes place after 5 years.

  • The second and subsequent renewals:

    • Every 5 years until you turn 30 years old.

    • Every 10 years once you are over 30.

Even if you do not renew within the deadline, you will not lose your long-term national residence authorization. However, the Immigration Office will check that you still meet the conditions under which it was granted.
